  1. In general, I like your analyses. Marginal productivity of debt, counterfeit credit, irredeemable debt, etc.

I have to say, though, that when you hit on the “useless ingredient” argument, I tend to cringe a little. Your other arguments have a kind of crystaline clarity to them. They explain so much, while being easy to understand.

Your useless ingredient argument (basically, against government regulations), is overbroad, and suffers for it. Someone, presumably a government body, thought that those ingredients *weren’t* useless. So many times these ‘ingredients’ are protecting others from the *externalities* that unregulated businesses might avoid paying for, like pollution, or the risk that someone will be harmed by the unregulated actions of the business. Similarly, a business following regulations gains some measure of protection against lawsuits by others (customers, neighbors, etc.) for harms they may have otherwise caused.

Obviously, there exist bad regulations, that increase costs but provide very little benefit, but those cases deserve their own compelling analysis. The baker adding preservatives more likely adds 1% to the cost, and increases shelf life as well as customer satisfaction of bread that doesn’t spoil right away. A hygenic bathroom available to dairy workers increases food safety and worker safety.

I can imagine that the ‘useless ingredient’ argument resonates with some of your audience, but I find it mostly trite, and because it is so much less compelling than your other arguments, it muddies your message. If you want to be a crusader against government regulations, that could be a full-time job, and, if you’re honest, you’ll find, I think, when you dig deeper into most regulations, the case for them being ‘useless’ will become less and less clear.

It seem like a shame that you want to make this argument such a big part of your presentations, when your other ideas are so much more powerful and insightful. I have to wonder if I’m alone in having this reaction.
